People You Know conversations are essential when it comes to marriage equality! Did you know that 40% of the membership of open and affirming congregations don’t support marriage equality? One conversation can cut that number significantly.
We want to hold People You Know conversations across the state and we need your help to do it. On Saturday, August 23rd, 19 people – both LGBT and allies, from Greek Orthodox to the United Church of Christ (5 denominations total) came together to experience holding conversations about marriage equality with people they know.
We talked, we laughed, and a few tears were shed as we worked together to learn to listen gracefully and actively, helping our conversation partner go deeper with how questions rather than our typical whys. Genuine curiosity builds bridges and breaks down barriers. Together we sharpened our listening and communication skills, knowing that people are twice as likely to support marriage equality if they have had one conversation with a supporter. We learned how to share our support of marriage equality from all of our identities – as parents, kids, professionals, and most importantly, as people of faith.
