Phoenix receives a perfect score on HRC’s Municipal Equality Index

phxPhoenix is one of 25 cities nationwide to receive a 100% score on the Human Rights Campaign’s Municipal Equality Index, an annual ranking assessing the level of pro-LGBT laws and policies in municipalities across the country.

Mayor Greg Stanton, who is expected to celebrate our capital city’s perfect score during a press conference today, said that Phoenix’s ranking is reflective of the city’s commitment to protecting and valuing LGBT citizens:

“It’s a recognition by me that I want the very best and brightest people to stay here in Phoenix, including our LGBT community. I want them to make sure they feel fully supported by their city government.”

Despite no statewide protections on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression, Phoenix has implemented numerous policies to protect LGBT citizens, including anti-discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, and government contracts.

Equality for LGBT Arizonans is not only a matter of ensuring fundamental freedoms. Mayor Stanton says pro-LGBT laws are vital in order for Phoenix to remain economically competitive with other cities across the country:

“Companies want to move to or increase jobs in locations where the laws are similar to their corporate policies about supporting all of their employees, including the LGBT community. For us to be able to retain the best and the brightest and attract the best and the brightest, we have to have laws that say we want the best and the brightest.”

Mayor Stanton — a staunch supporter of LGBT equality — is also proud to serve as a co-chair of Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, a nationwide coalition of Mayors dedicated to securing marriage for loving same-sex couples.

We thank Mayor Stanton and the City of Phoenix who stand with the growing number of Arizonans who know that freedom means freedom for everyone — and that no one should be denied critical freedoms, like marrying the person they love, because of who they are.
