We’re proud to announce Rev. Debra Peevey as the Faith Director for Why Marriage Matters Arizona’s campaign to move marriage forward in Arizona! As Faith Director, Rev. Peevey will work to identify and train faith leaders across a broad scope of religions and denominations that support marriage equality.
Rev. Debra Peevey has over 30 years of experience working for the inclusion of LGBT persons as full participants in the life and leadership of the church and society. Debra has spent her professional life speaking with clergy and persons of faith from all traditions about things of consequence as well as controversy. Finding a shared language of faith, call, and inclusion, she is able to invite others to open their minds and their hearts.
As the first openly ordained pastor by the Christian Church, (Disciples of Christ) in 1981, Debra helped to blaze the trail for those who followed after her. As senior pastor, she led her congregation, Findlay Street Christian Church to become the first Open and Affirming congregation in the Christian Church, Disciples of Christ in 1987 and later that year provided pastoral leadership in the creation of the denominational effort, the Gay, Lesbian and Affirming Disciples, GLAD.
Following service on the national board of her denomination, Debra moved out of congregational work and in to work as a hospice chaplain as well as beginning post-graduate work in adult spiritual formation. Rev. Peevey has also served LGBT causes such as Washington United for Marriage and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.
We are thrilled to welcome Rev. Peevey to our team here at Why Marriage Matters Arizona. Welcome, Rev. Peevey!
