Arizona families file lawsuit seeking the freedom to marry

LambdaAZToday, eight brave Arizona families filed a lawsuit challenging the state’s discriminatory ban on marriage for same-sex couples in Arizona. The suit was filed by Lambda Legal and is now the second case seeking the freedom to marry in the state.

Jeremy Zegas, our Project Director, released this statement, cheering on Arizona couples who filed today’s important suit:

“Freedom means freedom for everyone. Couples who love each other should be supported by Arizona, not marginalized. The courageous families filing this lawsuit, by telling their stories and sharing their decades of commitment, will help Arizonans understand why marriage matters to same-sex couples. The fact is, right now, Arizona families are being denied thousands of critical protections. It’s time to fix that. We welcome this legal challenge. Arizona is ready for the freedom to marry.”

Today’s lawsuit is just the latest indicator of historic momentum for the freedom to marry in Arizona. Just last week, new polling revealed that a record number of Arizonans support marriage for same-sex couples, with statewide polls showing support by an 8-point margin.

Why Marriage Matters Arizona is proud to stand alongside these couples—and thousands more across the state—who just want the protections and respect that only marriage can provide in the state we all call home.
