Since that historic day, there have been 22 consecutive pro-marriage rulings nationwide using the precedent of the Windsor ruling—including two landmark rulings just yesterday for Utah and Indiana!
So today, on the one-year anniversary of Windsor we are calling on Arizona’s Attorney General Tom Horne to stop wasting taxpayer money defending our state’s harmful constitutional amendment banning marriage for same-sex couples
With one pro-marriage ruling after another, there’s just no good reason for Arizona’s Attorney General to continue to defend our state’s ban when he knows it can’t pass constitutional muster.
And the clock is ticking, as Arizona’s marriage case is quickly progressing through federal court. By the end of the month a response is due by the defendant and plaintiffs on a request for a summary judgment—where the presiding judge is asked to rule on the constitutionality of Arizona’s marriage ban without the need for a trial. And anytime after the 21st of July, oral arguments will be scheduled.
With each passing day that our Attorney General defends Arizona’s ban, not only are countless taxpayer dollars wasted, but thousands of loving and committed couples in our state continue to be denied the critical protections that only marriage can provide.
The pressure is mounting on the Attorney General to stop defending our state’s ban. With a ruling yesterday at the federal appellate level—just one step below the U.S. Supreme Court—we know it’s only a matter of time before the freedom to marry is the law of the land.
It’s time for our Attorney General to stand with the growing majority of Arizonans who believe it’s time to stop harming Arizona families. Click here to tell Attorney General Tom Horne: Get on the right side of history. Stop defending Arizona’s marriage ban in court.
