Today, in an effort to remove discrimination from Arizona’s Constitution and win the freedom to marry for all couples in the state, Equality Arizona, the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona, the Human Rights Campaign and Freedom to Marry launched a campaign called Why Marriage Matters Arizona.
Why Marriage Matters Arizona is a grassroots public education campaign to build support for the freedom to marry in Arizona. The campaign will open a dialogue with Arizonans about why marriage is important to same-sex couples and their families and is consistent with the values of liberty and freedom.
Rebecca Wininger, president of Equality Arizona, said it’s time to spark a conversation about marriage in Arizona:
“Everyone should have the freedom to marry the person they love in the state that they call home, and that includes same-sex couples in Arizona. The national landscape for marriage is shifting rapidly. It’s time to get the conversation started here in Arizona.”
In the coming months, we’ll knock on doors, pick up the phone and spark conversations in communities across the state about why marriage matters — and together, we’ll move marriage forward in Arizona.
This morning in Phoenix, Nelda and Karen, a couple from Scottsdale who have been together for 55 years, helped us kick off our campaign. They stood with us today because after 55 years together, they want their love and commitment to be respected in Arizona. As Nelda said, “We don’t want anything special.”
And that’s exactly why we’re launching this campaign today — because all Arizona families deserve to be treated with respect and dignity.
