A native of Yuma, Arizona, Councilor Romero says she’s never second-guessed why gay and lesbian couples should be treated equally under the law. She grew up in a tight-knit, farm-working family, with parents who taught her the importance of hard work, civic engagement. Her father was also a lifelong union member and instilled in his daughter the importance of working to make their community a better place for everyone who called it home.
For Council Romero, advocating for marriage equality in Arizona is merely an extension and affirmation of the same values she has lived by since childhood. Treating your neighbors as you wish to be treated and ensuring fairness for all—that’s what winning the freedom to marry for same-sex couples is all about. And that’s why Councilor Romero is joining with Why Marriage Matters Arizona to overturn Arizona’s constitutional amendment banning marriage for same-sex couples:
We thank Councilor Romero for standing with the growing majority of Arizonans who believe everyone should have the freedom to marry the person they love. And as litigation challenging Arizona’s marriage ban quickly moves through federal court, we’re confident that as more and more Arizonans join our campaign, we’re closer than ever to securing the freedom to marry once and for all.
